Assist Programme

At The UCL Academy we have enrolled in an exciting programme for our Level 1 students. The ASSIST programme aims to reduce smoking amongst young people aged 12-13 (Level 1) by training influential students to disseminate new norms of behaviour through their established social networks. It has been rigorously evaluated as A Stop Smoking in Schools Trial, funded by the Medical Research Council, which took place in 59 secondary schools in South Wales and the South-West of England.

Results from the trial showed that smoking levels were reduced amongst students who were at ‘high-risk’ of becoming regular smokers (i.e. those students who were ex-smokers, experimenters and occasional smokers). Furthermore, the programme was acceptable to students, teachers and health promotion trainers, and was compatible with a wide range of school contexts.

There are several stages to the programme:

  • Identifying, through a peer questionnaire, the most influential students in Level 1.
  • Training selected students as ‘peer supporters’ to have informal conversations with other Level 1 students about the risks of smoking and the benefits of being smoke-free.
  • Providing support for the peer supporters at four school-based follow up sessions.

External trainers will implement the ASSIST Programme and supply all the resources required. A designated school contact will liaise with the ASSIST team and accompany the students at key stages during the programme.
