UCL Academy Learning to Make a Difference Together
In This Section
STEM Clubs

STEM clubs are held from 3:35 - 4:30pm. Here students get to work on a great range of projects, often with the opportunity to enter national competions. Here is a list of STEM clubs currently being run at UCL Academy.

FLL (First Lego League): The UCL Academy SMURFS

The Engineering department at UCL Academy are proud to present The UCL Academy SMURFS. Ten fantastic learners from our lower school Foundation level and Level 1.

First Lego League introduces our younger learners to real-world engineering challenges by building LEGO-based robots to complete tasks on a thematic playing surface. FLL teams, guided by their creativity, teachers, and external mentors, discover exciting career possibilities and through the process, learn to make positive contributions to society.

Foundation and Level 1 learners get to:

  • Design, build, test and program robots using LEGO MINDSTORMS® technology
  • Apply real-world math and science concepts
  • Research challenges facing today’s scientists
  • Learn critical thinking, team-building and presentation skills
  • Participate in tournaments and celebrations

What FLL teams accomplish is nothing short of amazing. It’s fun. It’s exciting. And the skills they learn will last a lifetime.

Greenpower Challenge

Greenpower is the trading name of a charitable organisation, the Greenpower Education Trust, whose objective is to inspire more young people to become engineers by presenting the engineering industry as an interesting and relevant career choice which could help to solve problems relating to the personal, social and emotional development (known in Britain as PSED) of individuals and societies. The main idea is for teams of students between the ages of 9 and 25 to build and race their own electric powered race cars on top racing circuits such as Goodwood.

At The UCL Academy we currently have Level1+ and Level 3 groups both in the process of getting sponsorship so that we can begin building an electric car. They have formed teams within the teams e.g. Design, marketing, construction etc. We will eventually enter into races once the cars are built.
