STEAM Specialism

The UCL Academy is a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) specialist school. While we aspire to excellence across all academic disciplines, we are particularly focused on encouraging students in STEAM disciplines where women and minority groups can often be under-represented.

Academy students take full advantage of our sponsorship by UCL, one of the world’s research powerhouses, to develop their understanding through lectures and visits.

The Academy’s Chair of Governors is Lucie Green, Professor of Physics and a Royal Society University Research Fellow at the UCL Mullard Space Science Laboratory. As a leading scientist Lucie is an inspiring role model for the students, particularly girls, considering a career in STEAM, and gave an interview on this theme to the Evening Standard in 2018.

The Academy’s annual STEAM Fest gives students the opportunity to both showcase their research and learn more about careers in science from senior professionals, including events designed to get more girls into science. Our STEAM Fest in 2020 was covered by the Ham & High.
